First United Methodist Church was founded in 1888 by men and women who were devoted to Christ’s teachings and dedicated to the education that Nebraska Wesleyan University (NWU) would provide the families of University Place.

Actual construction was delayed for a time until December, 1909 when the church building was officially dedicated.

Part of the stunning architecture of First Church are the massive Greek columns both outside and inside the structure, the amphitheater style balcony and the massive stained glass dome with a patriotic design of Abraham Lincoln, purchased by the G.A.R. of University Place.
